Demand increasing for lawyers with Middle East experience

Barclay Simpson recruits lawyers into financial institutions such as investment banks, commercial and retail banks, asset managers and hedge funds, insurance groups and private equity/venture capitalists as well as major commercial and industrial companies.

The legal recruitment market in the Middle East has been steady throughout the first half of 2011 with many employers still feeling the effects of the global recession. Recruitment in Dubai has picked up from 2010 levels and we expect it to grow again as the local debt issue is resolved and stability is restored in the Emirate. There is still a steady supply of good quality opportunities in other locations such as Abu Dhabi and Qatar and across the region as a whole.

It is currently more difficult to make a move into the region without being able to demonstrate real commitment to living and working in the Middle East. Ideally this should be combined with previous local experience. It is important to understand the way business is conducted in the region and as a result previous Middle East experience is sought after. Western legal training is usually advantageous and as in-house legal teams grow, Arabic language skills are increasingly important.
